Sushi!

I've totally become a sushi addict over the last couple of weeks. I'm not sure how it happened. The idea of raw fish used to disgust me so much that I couldn't even try it. Of course, most of the sushi (maki rolls) that I eat is cooked, but I've been trying out some of the raw fish too and it's quite good. My favorite is the philly roll which is generally smoked salmon w/ cream cheese and the sweet potato roll which has no fish in it. But tonight I tried the spicy tuna and boy is it spicy!!

Sinkhole!

So I woke up on Tuesday morning to the sound of helicopters overhead my neighborhood. I didn't think too much of it until I got to work and Anne told me that a watermain had broken right outside Glenn's Diner (my favorite restaurant and also next to my hairdressers). The watermain was 36" wide and 85 years old made of cast iron. It had been around 2 degrees outside most of the weekend and then it warmed up a little on Monday and they think that's why it burst.

So it flooded up and down the street. There is some video on CNN.com of the flooding that's pretty impressive. It flooded a lot of the cars, but it made the street give out and we now have an 80 foot wide sinkhole in the middle of Montrose Avenue. It's about 5 blocks from where I live, and right around the corner from Anne's apartment. Anne's car was parked nearby and got flooded and she hasn't had consistent water pressure since it happened.

I'm alive!

Sorry I haven't been posting. Nothing to say, really. The most exciting thing going on in my life right now is that I tried chicken bratwurst and they were surprisingly excellent. As a comparison: Real bratwurst: 270 cal, 22 g fat. Chicken bratwurst: 140 cal, 7 g fat. And I swear they taste good! Turkey Bratwurst, on the other hand tastes like dog food. And some picky dogs might not even eat it. That obviously excludes Hoss. Also the chicken sausages come in crazy flavors. Just weird, really. Spinach? Really?

Finally!

Felt the need to share. My family will understand, and my mother will be thrilled because I won't insist on watching it everytime I'm at her house. I just bought Season 2 of Dirty Jobs. I would have Mike Rowe's babies. :)

Law & Order is good again!

So I watched the 2 hour premier of Law & Order (original recipe) and it's quite good. I don't hate the female ADA, I like the guy (Linus Roache) who plays the new Executive DA (thank you imdb), Sam Waterston is as crotchety as Steven Hill (Adam Schiff) ever was, and Jeremy Sisto, the new detective is kinda hot. Oh, and the story was pretty good. And I couldn't resist putting up this picture. Those were my 2 favorite ADA's.

Another Food Post

So I cooked up my dinner tonight, veggies and halibut (Be proud Mom, I cooked!). Looked beautiful, but before I cooked the fish I smelled it because I wasn't sure if it would still be good. Smelled fishy. So I looked it up on the internet and everything said that Halibut should smell like the fresh ocean, not super fishy. Well, I think the freaking ocean smells fishy, so I didn't know what to do! So I cooked it all up, ate all the veggies, about 3 bites of fish and threw the rest away. Because I am so not gourmet and don't know what halibut is supposed to smell or taste like thank you very much.

Here's a lovely picture of it while it was sauteeing. The veggies were onions, red peppers, artichokes, and fresh green beans.

The green beans were the best. The onions and artichokes were good, but the red peppers were overdone. So now I know how to saute vegetables. Good to know.

Stuffed Mushrooms

Well, they look better than they tasted, unfortunately. I decided, while at the grocery store that I wanted to try stuffed mushrooms, and I thought I could do it without a recipe, but these were waaaay too healthy for me. :) Next time I need to mix something else in with spinach, like bread crumbs or something.

Happy New Year!

We went to the Map Room for New Year's, which ended up being very nice and laid back. The bar never got very full, and more importantly I went 4-0 in pool that night. That would be me beating Bill TWICE, and Katie letting me beat her twice too. It was lovely.
